How to play Patchrook

A visual guide · Stitch your first quilt

Your goal

Find a cosy home for every patch.

Fill every usable square with the cloth in your tray. Turn, flip and preview each patch before placing it. Every complete quilt earns points, and Next Quilt brings another. There is no clock or last quilt.

Quilt 1 · Empty

Simplified teaching diagrams of the real first quilt. It has 9 usable squares and three patches, A, B and C. This is one valid arrangement; any complete fit works.

01Place the first corner

A fills three squares

Quilt 1 · After A⠿A✕
The first quilt offers a ready A preview. Press Place to fill the two upper-left squares and the square below them. You can cancel this example and choose a different first patch.

Click or tap a patch, then a board square for its button. Check the preview and press Place. Rotate turns it clockwise; Flip mirrors it. The patch letter and stitch motif help you recognise it as it turns. Colours identify cloth; they do not have to match a target.

  • Tab, Enter and Space work with the buttons. Keys 1 to 6 choose a tray slot, R rotates, F flips and Escape cancels.
  • On the board, arrows move the button. Enter or Space places a valid preview. Choosing, turning and previewing are free.

02Leave a home for the straight patch

B takes the right column

Quilt 1 · After BA✕⠿B⋮
Choose B and the top-right square, then Place. Its three squares fill the right column. A stays where you put it, and three spaces remain for C.
  • A striped preview and a message show an overlap or a patch reaching beyond the quilt. Choose another square or turn the patch until it fits.
  • Later quilts can include a cut-out square marked with a little hollow circle. Cloth goes only on usable squares.

03Put C’s button on the centre square

The button follows the cloth

C · Button on clothEmptyC⠿ButtonChoose the centre square
C starts with an empty upper-left corner. Its button belongs to the first cloth square in the top row. Choose the middle square of the board for that button; the rest of C extends down and left.

Every square has a patch

Quilt 1 · CompleteA✕⠿B⋮C◇
Place C to fill the middle square and the two lower-left spaces. Quilt 1 is complete. Its last placement earns the whole 300-point award once.

To try a different fit while playing, press Cancel, choose a placed patch and press Lift Patch. Restart Quilt returns every patch to the tray. Both are free, keep this quilt and preserve points from your earlier quilts. A completed quilt offers Next Quilt or Bank.

04Keep stitching, then Bank

Points belong to completed quilts

Quilt complete150 + 90 + 60+300 pointsNext Quilt or Bank
Every complete quilt earns 150 points, plus 10 per usable square and 20 per patch. The first quilt is 150 + 9 × 10 + 3 × 20 = 300 points.
  • Next Quilt starts an empty board and keeps your score. Later quilts grow to five squares across and repeat a continuing cycle, with turns and tray order that can vary.
  • Bank ends your run with points from completed quilts. After this first clear, banking partway through Quilt 2 still keeps 300. An unfinished quilt adds no points.
  • You can Bank before your first clear too, for zero points. Play Again starts fresh and Menu returns to the games.
